A VR application for speeding up time passage during chemotherapy
about the project
The ERC Advanced Project AN-ICON announces a spin-off, the Proof of Concept project TIMELAPSE, starting on June 1st, 2024. Chemotherapy can involve lengthy treatment sessions, lasting up to several hours. Such a duration, spent in an overly medicalized setting, can induce in the patients a monopolizing focus on their pathology, which leads to a substantial decrease in their mental well-being. One way to alleviate the impact of long chemotherapy sessions would be accelerating subjective time passage as perceived by the patients, therefore making the treatment seemingly end more quickly. Stemming from AN-ICON's research, TIMELAPSE proposes to prototype, test, and launch on the market a virtual reality (VR) application that will accelerate subjective time passage during chemotherapy. TIMELAPSE will bring this idea to proof of concept through a participatory and patient-centred design approach to innovatively incorporate in the conception of the VR application the irreplaceable perspective of its end-users: the oncologic patients. The project will rely on a collaboration between three actors: a core research group (part of AN-ICON), an industrial partner expert in VR applications for healthcare (Khora) and a clinical partner (Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori) with substantial expertise in cancer treatment.

HEAD OF RESEARCH DIVSION
Federica Cavaletti is a Post-Doc researcher at the Department of Philosophy “Piero Martinetti” of the University of Milan, where she is also Adjunct Professor in Media for Social Inclusion. She obtained her PhD degree at the Catholic University of Milan, with a dissertation on time perception in audiovisual media, which she explored both theoretically and utilizing both methods from cognitive psychology and micro-phenomenological interviews. She has been a visiting PhD student at the Interacting Minds Center at Aarhus University (2018-19) and a visiting scholar at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, New York (2021-22). Her current research interests concern how VR experiences can be deployed in professional domains such as medicine and mental health. Within TIMELAPSE, she is in charge of coordinating the theoretical research grounding the development of the project (Phase 1) and the participatory design activities (Phase 2). She is also providing support in the assessment process (Phase 3) and in the pre-commercialization (Phase 5) of the VR application which will constitute the project’s final outcome. Lastly, she is responsible for information exchange between Partners, and between Partners and PI.
Project Manager
Irene Magrì is a project manager with a background in communication for cultural organizations and marketing. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University of Turin and a Master's degree in Communication Cultures from the University of Milan.
