Degrees of Freedom between Cinema and Virtual Reality
The ERC AN-ICON research group of the University of Milan, together with Filmmaker Festival and in collaboration with Veneto Film Commission and RaiCinema, have established “Degrees of Freedom”, the first award addressed to Italian Virtual Reality productions, and the award "RaiCinema Channel".
Open to Italian VR works created between 2019 and 2022, the “Degrees of Freedom” award aims to take stock of Italian production and enhance its artistically most significant and innovative expressions, offering specific attention to the relationship between the language of cinema and that of new immersive media.
In collaboration with Filmmaker and in the frame of its renowned Festival of independent and experimental cinema (taking place in Milan on November 18 – 28), AN-ICON will showcase the selection of VR works shortlisted for the awards "Degrees of Freedom" by a jury composed by Barbara Grespi, Giancarlo Grossi, Luca Mosso, Valeria Polidoro, and Sara Tirelli.
The evening will be concluded by the roundtable “Dwelling the images. The shapes of environmental image”, at the presence of some of the VR authors and of the organizers.

Pre-selected works
Over the numerous applications received, the jury composed by Barbara Grespi, Giancarlo Grossi, Luca Mosso,Valeria Polidoro, and Sara Tirelli has pre-selected 9 VR works that will be showcased in the framework of Filmmaker Festival:
HYPERCHEMNITZ (Emanuele Dainotti, Belgio/Germania, 2022, VR 3DOF, 4’15’’)
A letter addressed to a love ended in 2025 in Chemnitz, Germany, when the Nazis have regained power and forced humanity to take refuge in virtual worlds, draws the outlines of a dystopian future poised between private and public, real and imaginary.
Montegelato (Davide Rapp, Italia, 2021, VR 3DOF, 28’)
The waterfalls of Montegelato, near Rome, have been the set of hundreds of audiovisual productions. Through the multiplication and superimposition of virtual screens that appear in every direction of the immersive space, the experience reconstructs an imaginary archive linked to the specificity of the landscape, from time to time background of historical, comic, dramatic, erotic and sci-fi adventures.
Gang Dance (Monica Mazzitelli, Italia, 2021, VR 3DOF, 5’20’’)
A dancing performance that surrounds and oppresses denying any way out. A symbolic journey in the universe of social networks, reflecting on the abuse of the body and image between exposure and sharing.
Moondust (Noemi Forti, Italia, 2019, VR 3DOF, 10’)
Returning from their first trip to the Moon, the Apollo 11 astronauts face a lockdown period since they are contaminated by potential pathogenic microorganisms present on lunar soil. Filled with memories, dreams, and expectations, the confinement space marks the distance that separates History from the intimate events of its protagonists.
The Italian Baba (Omar Rashid, Italia, 2020, VR 3DOF, 20’)
A journey to India in search of a spiritual guide, inspired by A piedi nudi sulla terra by Folco Terzani and accompanied by the narrative voice of Elio Germano. To become fully her/himself, one will have to learn to look through the eyes of the other. Virtual reality becomes the tool to accomplish this journey.
Affiorare (Rossella Schillaci, Italia, 2022, VR 3DOF, 20’)
An immersive documentary about daily life in the penal institutions of Turin, Milan and Venice, where female inmates live together with their children. Prison as seen by children is filled with imaginary phantasmagoria and evocative animations. Waiting to be able to fly away, free into open space.
MONO (Chiara Troisi, Italia, 2022, VR 6DOF, Colore, 14’)
Interiority as space, claustrophobic and monochromatic. The fragmenting and imploding of the personal world. A path to healing that passes through the expressive power of virtual reality.
Il dubbio (Matteo Lonardi, Italia, 2021, VR 6DOF, 21’)
What is the secret of artistic creation? Probably the ability to doubt, questioning one’s identity and choices. From Leonardo's laboratory to the contemporary painting of Beatrice Wanjiku, Il dubbiois is an interactive journey through time and history in search of the mysterious power of uncertainty.
Becoming-With – Encounters in an Augmented Garden (Anna Pompermaier e Cenk Güzeliş, Italia, 2022, XR, 15’)
A multi-user extended reality experience dedicated to the identity of human after human, an effect of reflections and environments generated by artificial intelligence operating through the fluid and changing process of becoming.
