Exploring Artistic, Cultural, and Historical Heritage through Computer Vision

Computer vision aims to enable machines to understand and interpret visual information from the world, much like humans do. In the context of cultural heritage, computational methods are crucial for analyzing, preserving, and restoring artifacts, as they allow us to handle vast amounts of complex data, uncover hidden details, and automate tasks that would otherwise be time-consuming or impossible.

In this talk, Sinem Aslam will present an overview of her research journey in computer vision, highlighting key milestones and developments along the way. She will then focus on her research interest at the intersection of machine learning, archaeology, and art analysis, exploring how these technologies are being applied to analyze, and restore cultural heritage through various ongoing projects.

Biography

Sinem Aslan

Sinem Aslan is an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Historical Studies "Federico Chabod” at the University of Milan. She holds a BSc in Electronics Engineering from Ankara University and an MSc and PhD in Computer Science from Ege University, Turkey. During her PhD studies, she was a visiting researcher at Boğaziçi University, Turkey. She previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Milano-Bicocca and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where she also served as an Assistant Professor.

Her research focuses on pattern recognition, computer vision, and machine learning, with applications in the analysis of fine art and cultural heritage. Her work includes visual analysis of ancient coins, the study of artistic techniques in paintings, and the digital restoration of frescoes. She has contributed to projects such as BRIDGE, VENEZIA2021, and the EU Horizon2020 RePAIR project, and has collaborated on the EU Pathfinder project MUHAI. She has co-organized scientific events, including FAPER (International Workshop on Fine Art Pattern Extraction and Recognition) and the CHAOS challenge at ISBI2019. She is a member of the IAPR Technical Committee 19 (Computer Vision for Cultural Heritage Applications) and serves on the Editorial Boards of several journals, including Journal of the Franklin Institute and Elsevier Array.
